A misty, lush green hill station up in the Annamalai range of Kerala, Munnar is a tea plantation centre. Tea gardens, some of the highest in the world stretch up the sides of the hills an dare interspersed with pockets of forest rich in wildlife. Munnarin fact is like a giant Japanese garden stretching to the end of the horizon and makes an interesting change from coastal, palm fringed Kerala. Adjacent nearly to Anaimudi, the highest peakin South India, Munnar is nearly 1600 metres above sea level. Since the 30 odd tea gardens around Munnar are all privately owned, the majority of them by Tata Tea, the town itself is beautifully maintained. A colonial town, clean and neat and brightly painted, it has its own charm.

Munnar is situated in the Idukki district of Kerala State in India . The word "Munnar" literally means three rivers. The 3 mountain streams namely Madurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala join together here. Throughout the British rule in India , Munnar was the summer resort of the Government officials. The innate splendor, serenity and mild cold climate all over the year make it the much loved tourist place of both Indians and foreigners. There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar, majority of which are owned by the Tata and Kannan Devan Group. The tea estates, mounts, lakes and woodlands inside Munnar range represent its exquisiteness. The tea plantations covering the Munnar hills give us the feeling of seeing a endless green carpet. |
